Transport

We have one quantum Sesfikile for multiple trips into our local communities to provide transport to our children attending Sinethemba to and from school. We have contracted an additional vehicle and driver to transport Sinethemba children residing in the Hout Bay area. Transport remains one of the big service delivery areas of the Association due to the difficulty that our clients face in accessing public transport because of the severity of their disabilities, whether it is intellectual / physical or a combination of both. Apart from the physical challenges that clients experience some of our clients have added difficulties due to the use of assistive devices that cannot be transported on public transport. We also assist with medical care by providing transport to facilities ie Red Cross Hospital, Conradie Hospital etc.

Caring

Sinethemba’s children need 24 hour supervision and care due to their disabilities being severe and profound. Our Caring focus is to assist those children who have the ability to become as independent as possible. Children that attend Sinethemba have a variety of caring needs including supervision, feeding, re-positioning, play and nappy changes to name but a few. Caring also extends into teaching socially acceptable behaviour and how to communicate (whether it is verbally, through Makaton or the PEG system) and basic concepts. Our Carers also play a big role, alongside our Therapists, in implementing the Learning Programme on a daily basis. As part of our care, we provide a balanced lunch, which is for many of our children, the only nutritious meal for the day.

Learning Program

Sinethemba receives support from the Department of Education with the daily Learning Programme. This support is in the form of the LSPID task team that visits Sinethemba on a quarterly basis. The team consists out of an Educational Psychologist, Educator, Speech, Occupational and Physiotherapist. The Learning Programme focusses on basic concepts of daily living and providing those children, who have the potential to transfer to mainstream schools, with school readiness skills. Learning takes place through songs, table top activities, structured play as well as gross and fine motor skills. The learning program is adapted to each child based on the three levels of attainment ie Interactive, Transitional and Awareness. The main aim of the programme is to assist a child in becoming as independent as possible.

Therapy

The Association employs a full time Physio and a part time Occupational Therapist to provide appropriate therapies to the children. Each child has an individual intervention plan with specific goals according to his / her potential and diagnosis. Therapies are offered in individual or group sessions. We find that therapy provides an essential role in caring for a child with special needs to prevent progressive deterioration and to promote functional independence. The Therapists assist with assistive devices and appropriate orthotics. The therapists work alongside the carers and parents to ensure skills transferal for best outcomes.
